Andrological Issues and their Treatment

Andrological Issues and their Treatment

What is Andrology?

Andrology is derived from the Greek words Andros which implies male and Logos which to reason or to study. Hence, Andrology refers to the medical specialty which studies male health, particularly relating to the male reproductory system and urological problems.

Reproductive problems in men are increasing at a pace like it never has before. There are many reasons which have led to this increase involving what and how we consume, our fitness levels, and the drastic change from physically intense to a more sedentary lifestyle.

Another likely culprit is the presence of hormone – disrupting chemicals in a lot of food stuffs that we consume regularly unaware of their side effects. These chemicals are ubiquitous present in water bottles, food packaging, electronic devices and many other items we use on a regular basis.

Andrology Issues

Infertility

Infertility in men refers to the inability in ejaculating or ejaculating insufficient number of sperms needed to fertilize your partner’s egg.

Recent studies and surveys conducted by health professionals indicate that in around 40% of infertility couples, the male partner is either the sole cause or the contributing cause of infertility.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction also called as impotence refers to the inability in getting and keeping the erection firm enough for sex.

Having an erection trouble from time to time isn’t a cause for concern but if the situation persists then you must get an appointment with an Andrologist.

Speak to your doctor openly without being embarrassed as in some cases treating an underlying condition is enough to cure erectile dysfunction. In other cases, medications or other treatments might be needed.

Prostate Disease

1 out of 4 men above 55 years old has a prostate condition. This increases to 2 out of 4 men above 70 years of age.

The early stage of prostate disease may not have any symptom and hence it is recommended to not skip regular checkups for early diagnosis and prevention.

Also, being aware of your family history when it comes to prostate gland helps in combating the disease before the condition spirals out of control.

Male Hormone Deficiency

This is also called as testosterone deficiency which is a condition where the man’s body does not produce sufficient testosterone. Its main function is to regulate the sex drive and the production of red blood cells and sperm.

Surveys conducted by health professionals indicate that 2 out of every 100 men suffer from hormone deficiency.

There are two basic types male hormone deficiency:

Primary

This is called primary testicular failure. This originates from a problem in the testicles.

Secondary

This indicates a problem in the pituitary gland.

Prevention

The concept of prevention becomes more and more important in the practical sphere. In andrology it means to reduce the causes of sterility or dysfunctions in the sexual sphere, often before that the same sexual function begins.

Within the prevention, the intervention happens on more levels, including the single one, the couple and the background. The prevention, therefore, is fundamental element that can reduce the incidence of sterility from male factor.

Developing and nurturing a well-balanced lifestyle with adequate amount of time devoted to physical fitness and exercises goes a long way in staying away from health issues.

Treatment

Early diagnosis and treatment in men offers better protection. Depending upon the problem, your doctor may recommend medication or surgical treatment.

It is recommended to monitor your treatment effectiveness and also for signs of any side effects multiple times during the first year of treatment and yearly after that.
